Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will fly to Kolkata today morning by an air force plane to pay her last respects to Indian communist leader and former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu, who died on Sunday.
Hasina will return in the afternoon.
The PM is likely to be accompanied by Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad MP, Workers Party president Rashed Khann Memon MP, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal president HasanuL Haq Inu MP, Samyabadi Dal president among others.
Meanwhile, the cabinet, with Hasina in the chair, yesterday adopted a condolence reference over the death of Basu.
The condolence reference was taken following a directive from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who presided over the 53rd meeting of the cabinet, said press secretary to the prime minister Abul Kalam Azad.
Briefing the journalists, Azad said the cabinet expressed deep shock and sorrow over the death of veteran politician.
Basu will be always remembered as a legendary left politician in the politics of the subcontinent for his life-long struggle and sacrifices, the condolence reference said.
It said: “At the demise of Jyoti Basu, Bangladesh has lost a longtime well-wisher.”
The cabinet in its reference also recalled with deep gratitude that Basu, during the 1971 liberation war of Bangladesh, had arranged shelter and food for 10mn Bangladeshis who took refuge in the Indian state of West Bengal.
“People of Bangladesh will ever recall Basu’s contribution to ensure Bangladesh’s fair share of water in the Bangladesh-India Ganga Water Sharing Treaty,” the reference said.
